English Learners and the Common Core

Today, I made a presentation in New York City about the connection between English Language Learners and the Common Core State Standards. The basic messages were that these standards are for everyone. Unlike instruction or assessment, standards are not adjustable by child--these are goals for all children. Also, English Language teachers have an advantage in workin with these issues because they know how to teach language; the challenging text demands of common core will require more explicit teaching of language to all children (including those who are native English speakers).
