At this time of the year, I'm often asked about literacy charities. "Where could I make a donation that will make a difference in literacy?"
I understand the question: with all the charities that are seeking your help at this time of the year, it would sure be nice to be able to help one that helps literacy.
If you are looking for a way of helping to create a more literate world, I would recommend a gift to Reach Out and Read.
This is a fascinating medical group (I know, it is surprising that this isn't a bunch of reading teachers). Reach Out and Read involves pediatricians in prescribing books for young children. Who better to convince mothers to help their kids with early language development and literacy skills?
Money contributed to Reach Out and Read is mainly spent on children's books that are then
given to youngsters when they come for their health exams. You could make a contribution to the national organization (which provides book support across the country) or to a local health care organization that is involved in the effort. They provided books to 3.8 million children this year.
I'm a member of their board of directors and think highly of their efforts. They are really helping young children.
